Pakistan: Milk Production per Animal Sharply Lower
Milk production per animal stands sharply lower at 2,500 liters a year in Pakistan, which is seven times less than the production of 18,000 litres in developed countries and this comes despite the country being among top milk producers of the world.
Former finance minister and prominent businessman Syed Babar Ali made the observation while speaking to students at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) following a meeting with teachers on Saturday.

He suggested that for increasing milk production farmers should adopt modern practices, which would bring prosperity in the country. However, there have been some significant improvements in recent years as, according to Ali, major milk producing companies are contributing Rs40 billion to the incomes of farmers in Punjab, terming it a landmark achievement.

He said the country boasted of four weather seasons, best crops and the largest canal system, but it had to go a long way to achieve the development goal. In this regard, skilled manpower could play a major role.

Talking about heavy imports of tomato from India, he questioned the performance of agricultural scientists and underlined the need for bringing best brains to the teaching profession in a bid to produce quality manpower.

Faculty of Animal Husbandry Dean Dr Muhammad Sarwar said diseases were affecting increasing number of animals, which must be checked by taking appropriate measures.
